Finding Signal In The Noise

Contemporary abstract works by Denver artist Dan Harrington employ what he calls random intent by setting up conditions with unusual and somewhat unpredictable industrial materials combined with a personal aesthetic to form his art.

"I'd rather let the process unfold and find out what occurred after the work is finished than impose my notion of what the finished piece should be. It's up to the viewer to decide whether it's signal or noise."

In a Spanish cave, thousands of years ago, our ancestors made marks with their hands, silhouettes of four fingers and a thumb. They say, "I was here. I made this. I had meaning.”

Over time power structure tries to regulate meaning to compress it, brand it, capitalize it, erase or monetize it, weaponize it. In every era of repression, art is told to behave, entertain, or decorate. It is told to propagandize or stay silent. It refuses.

To be sentient is to search for meaning, to organize experience in the face of noise and manufactured amnesia. My work searches for signal buried in the noise. Recorded like a silhouette of a hand in a cave, art persists. Art Resists.
